• Introduce Yourself

The first thing your essay should do is introduce you as a person in a general way. Talk about your life, but don’t go into too much detail: this is an essay not an autobiography. • Have a Theme

The rest of your essay doesn’t have to follow a theme, but it will make writing it all the easier. If you want to just talk about some general things, then by all means go ahead. But it will help the flow of your essay if you find a way to tie things together. Maybe your theme is college, or maybe it’s a love of music, or maybe it’s family. All good essays tackle three points. These three points should relate to your theme in some way. For example, if family is your theme then point one could be the role of your father in how you got to college, points two could be how your mother drove you to be the best you can be, and point three could be how your brother wants to be just like you when he grows up.
